Rank Reasons
Roughleaf Aster (Eurybia radulina) occurs in the Pacific Northwest region of North America, and it is known from southwestern British Columbia in Canada, Washington, Oregon and California in the United States. It occurs in the Cascade Range, Coast Range (south to the Channel Islands), and northern and central Sierra Nevada. It is it is estimated that there are more than 300 occurrences, including on various National Forests and State Parks. Threats to Roughleaf Aster (Eurybia radulina) include the fragmentation and loss of habitat from residential, tourism, and recreation development and urbanization.
Range Extent Comments
Roughleaf Aster (Eurybia radulina) occurs in the Pacific Northwest region of North America where it is known from southwestern British Columbia in Canada, Washington, Oregon and California in the United States. It occurs in the Cascade Range, Coast Range (south to the Channel Islands), and northern and central Sierra Nevada. Range extent was estimated to be 370,000 square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (FNA 2006, CCH2 Portal 2024, GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are more than 300 occurrences of Roughleaf Aster (Eurybia radulina), rangewide (CCH2 Portal 2024, GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Threats to Roughleaf Aster (Eurybia radulina) include the fragmentation and loss of habitat from residential, tourism, and recreation development and urbanization.
Ecology & Habitat

Diagnostic Characteristics

Roughleaf Aster (Eurybia radulina) thrives at lower elevations than E. merita which is similar. Even though the two are often confused, populations are rarely if ever sympatric (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2006).

Habitat

Roughleaf Aster (Eurybia radulina) occurs in "dry rock outcrops, edges of forests, open forests, mostly on slopes, foothill oak woodlands, oak, oak-fir, yellow pine forests" (FNA 2006).
