Rank ReasonsGentiana clausa is a widespread perennial herb occurring on acid soils in moist open woods, on streambanks, and roadsides of eastern North America from Québec, Canada and Maine, United States south to North Carolina and west to Tennessee. There are over 600 occurrences of this species, which are potentially threatened by development, road maintenance, invasive species, succession, and other threats in some places. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent CommentsGentiana clausa occurs in eastern North America from Québec, Canada and Maine, United States south to North Carolina and west to Tennessee; it is primarily an Appalachian species (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2023, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024). Reports of this species occurring in Indiana and Missouri and west of this range have been based on specimens of G. andrewsii var. dakotica, or hybrids and introgressants (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2023). Range extent was estimated to be over 630,000 square kilometers using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences CommentsBy applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are 600 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact CommentsAlthough threats are not widely documented, Gentiana clausa is potentially threatened by development, road maintenance, invasive species, succession, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
