Taxonomic CommentsFlora of North America Editorial Committee (2016) treat Rhamnus crocea, R. ilicifolia, R. pilosa as distinct species, also mentioning the Mexico endemic R. insula, which was treated by Wolf (1938) as R. crocea ssp. insula. In contrast, Kartesz (1994) recognized the taxa in the flora area as subspecies: R. crocea ssp. crocea, R. crocea ssp. ilicifolia, and R. crocea ssp. pilosa.
