Rank Reasons
Symphyotrichum defoliatum is endemic to southern California, and formerly called Aster bernardinus. This species has been seldomly reported in recent years. While this species usually occurs in meadows, springs and streams, it also occurs in upland habitats. Many of the occurrences in Los Angeles and Orange County have been extirpated. Most of the occurrences in Riverside, San Diego and Orange Counties are on private lands and are threatened. It should be noted that there are some occurrences in these counties that are on Forest Service lands (Ward and Bittman 2004).
Occurrences Comments
76 total occurrences, 25 of which have been recently observed. At least 26 are extirpated as of 2010.
