Taxonomic Comments
According to Moberg (1995), Phaeophyscia squarrosa was formerly erroneously called P. imbricata. P. imbricata (Vainio) Essl. is the taxon originally listed for North America by Esslinger and Egan (1995), but the newer online checklists refer specimines of P. imbricata to P. squarossa and P. hispidula (P. imbricata sensu Esslinger (1978) = P. squarrosa and P. imbricata (Vainio) Essl. = P. hispidula).
