This record represents the broad concept of Usnea rubicunda, including U. pensylvanica following Esslinger (2018). Esslinger (2018) here expands the concept of Usnea rubicunda to include U. pensylvanica, while Esslinger and Egan (1995) treated them as distinct.

This lichen occurs in the eastern U.S. from Louisiana and northern Florida to western Pennsylvania. Its range resumes from Massachusetts to Nova Scotia. It also occurs in coastal California and in Oregon.
