Range Extent Comments
Range includes the upper James River drainage, Virginia, and a small part of West Virginia (Page and Burr 2011). This darter occurs throughout the Ridge and Valley and Blue Ridge provinces, and uplands of the extreme upper Piedmont province, with an isolated population in upper section of the Appomattox River system (Lee et al. 1980, Jenkins and Burkhead 1994).

Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Habitat includes rocky riffles of creeks and small rivers (Page and Burr 2011), with cool to warm, typically clear water; runs and riffles of gravel to boulder (Lee et al. 1980). Eggs are laid probably on the undersides of rocks or other cover.

Reproduction

Probably spawns April to May or early June. Some individuals sexually mature in 1 year, all by 2 years. Longevity normally 2-3 years. According to Bart and Page (1992), age range of breeding females is 2-3 years.
