Taxonomic Comments
Recognized as distinct from Allium cernuum by Kartesz in his 1999 Floristic Synthesis and by Weakley (2023). In contrast, FNA (vol. 26, 2002) included Allium allegheniense in A. cernuum.

Rank Reasons
Uncommon in its known range of western North Carolina, western Virginia, and eastern West Virginia, with historical records from northern Georgia and eastern Tennessee. Occurs in thin soils around mafic or calcareous rock outcrops.
Range Extent Comments
Originally described from Virginia to North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia, the species has also been found in eastern West Virginia; possibly more widespread.
