Limited to grassy slopes of the Southern Coast Ranges and the southern-most Sierra Nevada ranges in California. Including occurrences of all three varieties, there are over 120 known occurrences of Allium howellii. While some of these are historical, there are likely to be more undocumented occurrences, thus a range rank is appropriate.
