Range Extent20,000-200,000 square km (about 8000-80,000 square miles)
Number of Occurrences81 - 300
Rank Reasons
Restricted to northwestern California and southwestern Oregon; occurs in Douglas County and the Siskiyou Mountains in Oregon and in the adjacent North Coast, Klamath Ranges, and North Coast Ranges regions of California. Approximately 60-80 occurrences are believed extant in Oregon; occurrences have not been mapped in California. Occurs predominantly on serpentine talus slopes.Considered "fairly endangered" in California, where threatened by vehicles. Threats in Oregon include road construction and maintenance, mining, trampling, and erosion/rock slides.
Range Extent Comments
Restricted to northwestern California and southwestern Oregon. In Oregon, known from southern Douglas County south through the Siskiyou Mountains in Jackson, Josephine and Curry Counties. In California, known from the North Coast, Klamath Ranges, and North Coast Ranges (Hickman 1993). Confirmed in Colusa, Del Norte, Glenn, Lake, Mendocino, Shasta, Tehama, and Trinity counties (CNPS 2009); has also been reported from Siskiyou and Humboldt counties.
Occurrences Comments
Approximately 83 occurrences have been mapped in Oregon, about 20 of which have not been observed recently. Occurrences have not been mapped in California; approximately 18 distinct specimens are present in the Consortium of California Herbaria database (2009), 8 of which have been collected since 1980. Additional California sites might be found with targeted field survey.
Threat Impact Comments
Considered "fairly endangered" in California, where threatened by vehicles (CNPS 2009). Threats in Oregon include road construction and maintenance, mining, trampling, and erosion/rock slides.
Ecology & Habitat

Diagnostic Characteristics

Stigmas separate, flowers 1-3, leaves 2-4.

Habitat

Barren, dry, rocky slopes (including talus slopes) within upper montane coniferous forest, subalpine coniferous forest, and alpine boulder and rock field communities. Often on serpentine; rated as a broad endemic/strong indicator of serpentine substrates by Safford et al. (2005) (75-84% of occurrences on ultramafics). Habitat is also described as serpentine barrens. 600--2440 m.
