Taxonomic Comments
A distinct species, recognized as such by Kartesz, 1994. Asiatic plant (var. elata) is taller, many-flowered, and grows in meadows and birch forests.

Not very widespread, occurs in specialized habitat. Has been found in many additional locations in Alaska when actively sought. Its habitat in South Coastal Alaska is fairly common and more populations likely exist. Also in BC, WA.
Range Extent Comments
Alaska (Juneau, Prince William Sound, Cleveland Penninsula), Aleutian Islands (Adak, Atka, Atu, and Unalaska), British Columbia (Vancouver and Queen Charlotte Islands), and Washington. Japan and Kamchatka Peninsula (var. elatior). Also presumably in Russia.
Occurrences Comments
Known from three sites in Washington, at least 20 occurrences in coastal southern Alaska and the Aleutians. Many more likely exist in Alaska. Also in British Columbia.

Habitat

This species occurs in wet tundra, bogs, and meadows, at elevations ranging from 0 to 400 meters (Sheviak, 2020).
