Rank Reasons
Arctostaphylos hooveri is endemic to California and is known from Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties. The California Native Plant Society considers this species rare, but having sufficient numbers such that the potential for extinction is low at this time. Also, it is not considered very endangered (CNPS 2001). A. hooverii occurs in broadleaved upland forest, in chaparral, and lower montane coniferous forest (CNPS 2001), and specifically, it is found in rocky places (Hickman 1993).
