Taxonomic Comments
The second edition of The Jepson Manual (Baldwin et al. 2012) and Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2006) accept it as a distinct species, Balsamorhiza lanata. Kartesz (1994, 1999) includes Balsamorhiza hookeri var. lanata in his treatment of B. hookeri var. lagocephala. The California Native Plant Society (1994) and Hickman (1993) recognize the plant as a distinct taxon. FNA (2006) includes B. hookeri var. lagocephala in B. hookeri.
