Endemic to southwestern Montana and northern Wyoming, Castilleja nivea occurs in the rocky tundra and fellfields of the Absaroka and Beartooth Ranges. In Wyoming, the species is known from approximately twenty extant populations. At least eight of the twenty populations occur in designated wilderness areas and most others are in high elevation, rugged sites with low threats. Populations may be locally abundant, although they are often restricted to small areas of suitable habitat.
