Taxonomic Comments
FNA (vol. 19, 2006) recognized Cirsium eatonii var. eriocephalum and C. eatonii var. hesperium as distinct. In contrast, Kartesz (1994, 1999) included C. eriocephalum and C. hesperium in a broad concept of C. scopulorum. More recently, Ackerfield (2022, 2023) and Siniscalchi et al. (2023) found that the concept of C. eatonii var. eriocephalum consists of three distinct species: an even narrower C. scopulorum, C. funkiae, and C. tukuhnikivatzicum. Siniscalchi et al. (2023) continues to distinguish C. hesperium, elevated to species level, as well.
