Rank Reasons
Dicentra pauciflora occurs in the western United States, mainly in the Sierra Nevada of California and also in Western Transverse Ranges of southern California, the Klamath Range, and Cascade Range of northern California and southwestern Oregon. It is estimated that there are between 81 and 300 occurrences, and the total population size is more than 2500 plants. It occurs in California on the Los Padres, Plumas, and Sequoia National Forests (including within the Monarch Wilderness and Dome Land Wilderness), and on the Six Rivers National Forests, and Yosemite National Park. Threats include recreation impacts and the effects of long-term or extreme drought, such as may be exacerbated by climate change.
Range Extent Comments
Dicentra pauciflora occurs in the western United States, mainly in the Sierra Nevada of California and also in Western Transverse Ranges of southern California, the Klamath Range, and Cascade Range of northern California and southwestern Oregon. Range extent was estimated to be 131,400 square kilometers, using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1992 and 2023 (CCH2 2023, FNA 1997, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, Jepson Flora Project 2023, NatureServe 2023, SEINet 2023).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1992 and 2023, it is estimated that there are between 81 and 300 occurrences of Dicentra pauciflora rangewide (CCH2 2023, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, NatureServe 2023, SEINet 2023).
Threat Impact Comments
Threats include recreation impacts and the effects of long-term or extreme drought, such as may be exacerbated by climate change.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Dicentra pauciflora occurs in openings and gravelly areas, in coniferous forests, on volcanic and granitic soils, in mountains, especially the Sierra Nevada, at 1,200 to 3,000 meters elevation (FNA 1997, Jepson Flora Project 2023).

Reproduction

Flowering June to July (Jepson Flora Project 2023). Seeds have an elaiosome, so they may be dispersed by ants (FNA 1997).
