Habitat

Grows in pinyon-juniper, sagebrush, ponderosa pine, pygmy sagebrush, bristle-cone pine, and spruce-fir communities, usually on limestone or less commonly on calciferous shale; 1675 - 3355 m (Welsh 1993).
