Systenotheca vortriedei is endemic to California and known from Monterey and San Luis Obispo counties (CNPS 2001),and specifically from the Santa Lucia Mountains (Hickman 1993). While S. vortriedei is considered rare, it is found in sufficient numbers and distributed widely enough such that the current risk of extinction in low (CNPS 2001). S. vortriedei is found in chaparral, cismontane woodland on sandy or serpentinite soils between 520 and 1600 meters in elevation (CNPS 2001 and Hickman 1993).
