Recognized at the species level (Thermopsis fraxinifolia) in Kartesz (1999); has also been treated as T. mollis var. fraxinifolia (as in Kartesz, 1994).

A Southern Appalachian endemic known from Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia; it is extirpated in Alabama.
Range Extent Comments
A Southern Appalachian endemic; ranging from western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee south to northwestern South Carolina and northern Georgia (Weakley, 1997). Kartesz (1998) includes Alabama in its range, although it is extirpated there.
Occurrences Comments
Known from three to five occurrences in Tennessee (Tennessee Element Ranking Form, Edwin Bridges, 1984). Also occurs in Georgia and the Carolinas.
