Concept ReferenceKartesz, J.T. 1994. A synonymized checklist of the vascular flora of the United States, Canada, and Greenland. 2nd edition. 2 vols. Timber Press, Portland, OR.
Taxonomic CommentsDryopteris campyloptera as recognized in FNA (1993, vol. 2) and Kartesz (1994, 1999) appear to be similar (as noted in Weakley et al. (2024)), but one possibly small difference is that FNA includes D. spinulosa var. concordiana in its synonymy while the treatments in Kartesz place that name in the synonymy of D. intermedia.

Rank ReasonsDryopteris campyloptera is a fern found in the northeastern United States and southeastern Canada. With a large range extent, over 300 occurrences, and broad habitat preferences for abundant habitat, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent CommentsDryopteris campyloptera is found throughout southeastern Canada and New England extending south along the Appalachian Mountains to North Carolina USA. Range extent was estimated using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences CommentsBy applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be more than 300 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact CommentsAlthough threats are not widely documented, Dryopteris campyloptera is potentially threatened by development, road maintenance, invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
