Taxonomic Comments
This record represents the narrower North American Kosteletzkya taxon which includes althaeifolia, aquilonia, and pentacarpos (=virginica) material but not smilacifolia material. Alexander et al. (2012) treated this taxon as K. pentacarpos var. pentacarpos. Weakley (2024) elevates it to K. pentacarpos. In contrast, Kartesz (1994, 1999) and Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2015) treat K. pentacarpos (=virginica) more broadly and include K. smilacifolia in it. The species epithet used in Kartesz (1994, 1999) is virginica. The species epithet used in Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2015) is pentacarpos. As explained in Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2015), it was determined that the Eurasian and North American plants are the same species and since A.J. Cavanilles was the first to unite them, his choice of the epithet pentacarpos must be followed.
