Taxonomic Comments
FNA (vol. 9, 2014) expands the concept of Rubus allegheniensis to include R. alumnus, R. inclinis, R. concameratus, R. fryei, R. glandicaulis, R. pugnax, R. rosa, R. saltuensis, and R. sceleratus, which Kartesz (1994, 1999) treats as distinct. FNA also does not recognize distinct varieties in Rubus allegheniensis. Weakley et al. (2023) recognizes a narrower treatment of Rubus allegheniensis than FNA (2014), excluding R. alumnus and R. rosa as distinct species and R. apianus, R. impos, and R. licitus (which are listed as synonyms of R. allegheniensis by FNA) as synonyms of R. alumnus; that treatment also does accept the recognition of R. allegheniensis var. gravesii as a distinct variety. The treatment of R. allegheniensis in Weakley et al. (2023) appears to be similar to Widrlechner and Simith (2008) which references the R. allegheniensis synonymy listed in Widrlechner (1998).
