Taxonomic Comments
This species formerly was recognized as a subspecies of Moxostoma macrolepidotum. It was elevated to species status by Nelson et al. (2004), on advice of R. E. Jenkins and following Harris et al. (2002).

Range Extent Comments
Ohio, Cumberland, and Tennessee river drainages (Etnier and Starnes 1993), from Indiana to southern New York, and south to northeastern Mississippi, northern Alabama, and western North Carolina.
Occurrences Comments
This species is represented by a large number of subpopulations and locations.

Localized threats may exist, but on a range-wide scale no major threats are known.

Habitat

Large rivers over gravel to boulder substrates with swift water (Etnier and Starnes 1993, Boschung and Mayden 2004); occasionally in reservoirs, especially those with large headwater rivers (Etnier and Starnes 1993).
