Taxonomic Comments
Weakley et al. (2025) indicate that their treatment of Spiranthes praecox is more narrow than Sheviak and Brown in FNA (2002, vol. 26), however, this could be due to a narrowing of the range after re-examination of specimens (rather than a taxonomic difference) as explained by Wieboldt, Fleming, and Townsend in the Digital Atlas of the Virginia Flora (accessed 2025) in their comment, "Most specimens labeled Spiranthes praecox in Virginia herbaria have proven to be misidentified; in some other cases, supporting specimens for records originally mapped as this species have not been found despite comprehensive searches of Virginia and out-of-state herbaria. The current map reflects the occurrence of confirmed specimens, and the species appears to be much rarer than previously thought."
