Taxonomic Comments
Ertter (2007) outlines the genetic realignments of the tribe Potentilleae and places many species of Potentilla within the genus Drymocallis. FNA (vol. 9, 2014) elevates Potentilla arguta ssp. convallaria to full species as Drymocallis convallaria, therefore according to FNA Potentilla arguta ssp. arguta is equivalent to Potentilla arguta (= Drymocallis arguta).

Rank Reasons
Drymocallis arguta is a perennial herb that is native to a wide area of North America. Threats to this species include succession, mining, recreation (including off-road vehicles), invasive species, deer browse, rights-of-way construction and maintenance, and other threats in some places. With a large range extent, more than 1000 occurrences, abundant habitat, and broad habitat preferences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Drymocallis arguta is native to North America from Alaska south to Arizona, east to Texas, Pennsylvania, and New Brunswick (FNA 2014, GBIF 2024). Range extent was estimated using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be more than 1000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Drymocallis arguta is threatened by succession, mining, recreation (including off-road vehicles), invasive species, deer browse, rights-of-way construction and maintenance, and other threats in some places (NatureServe 2024). There is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand the scope and severity of threats for this taxon. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Drymocallis arguta grows in prairies, abandoned pastures, open woodlands, shallow soil and grassy openings on ridges, slopes, bluffs, and rocky barrens (FNA 2004).
