Range Extent Comments
Range includes the Arkansas River system in southeastern Kansas, southwestern Missouri, northeastern Oklahoma, and northwestern Arkansas (Mayden 2010, Page and Burr 2011). This species is most abundant in tributaries of the Arkansas River in Oklahoma and Missouri; in Kansas it is found only in Shafer Creek, a small direct tributary of Shoal Creek in Cherokee County; in Arkansas, this it occurs in a few creeks in the western part of the state, near the Oklahoma border in Franklin, Crawford, and Benton counties (Mayden 2010).

Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

This darter is often found in unpolluted, small, clear, cool streams and creeks with a clean gravel and/or cobble substrate; adults and juveniles are regularly found within substrate of large gravel and cobblestones, or are associated with submergent or emergent aquatic vegetation and are frequently found in association with organic debris and in undercut banks; this species is opportunistically associated with undercut banks with vegetation and/or overhanging trees and roots (Mayden 2010).
