Taxonomic Comments

Though the gender of the name LEPOMIS is feminine (see Bailey and Robins, 1988, Bull. Zool. Nomencl. 45(2):100), the 1991 AFS checklist (Robins et al. 1991) retained the masculine ending for MARGINATUS and other species, pending a vote by the ICZN on a petition (by Etnier and Warren) to treat LEPOMIS as masculine for nomenclatural purposes.

Range Extent Comments

Atlantic and Gulf Slope drainages, generally below Fall Line, from Tar River, North Carolina, to Brazos River, Texas; Former Mississippi Embayment from western Kentucky and eastern Arkansas south to the Gulf; common in southeastern portion of range, generally uncommon in west (Page and Burr 1991).

Occurrences Comments

This species is represented by a large number of subpopulations and locations.

Localized threats may exist, but on a range-wide scale no major threats are known.

Habitat

Swamps and sluggish creeks and small to medium rivers with sand/mud bottom; brushy pools.

Reproduction

Spawns April-September in St. Johns River, Florida.
