Rank Reasons
Eupatorium hyssopifolium occurs in the eastern United States, from New York and Massachusetts south to Florida and west to Texas. It is estimated that there are well over 1,000 occurrences rangewide. It occurs in wet sandy soils in woodlands and oak savannas, roadbanks, pastures, fields, disturbed areas, and along forest edges, where threats include woody plant encroachment and shading of open habitats due to the absence of fire and mowing and maintenance activities in rights-of-ways. However, these threats are considered negligible given the species' broad range, preference for disturbance, and large number of occurrences.
Range Extent Comments
Eupatorium hyssopifolium occurs in the eastern United States, from New York and Massachusetts south to Florida and west to Texas (FNA 2006). Range extent was estimated to be 1.9 million square kilometers, using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 1,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Threats to Eupatorium hyssopifolium are not well documented, but include woody plant encroachment and closure of canopy gaps due to the absence of fire, and mowing and maintenance activities in rights-of-ways (NatureServe 2024). However, their overall impact is likely negligible given species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Eupatorium hyssopifolium occurs in "woodlands and oak savannas, roadbanks, pastures, fields, disturbed areas, over calcareous and acidic substrates" (Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024). This species often inhabits wet sandy soils and prefers disturbance (Native Plant Trust 2024).
