Taxonomic Comments
This record is for the broad treatment of Grindelia hirsutula recognized in Strother and Wetter's treatment in FNA (2006, vol. 20), including a number of taxa that were previously recognized by Katesz (1994, 1999): G. acutifolia, G. camporum var. bracteosa, G. camporum var. camporum, G. columbiana, G. fastigiata, G. inornata var. angusta, G. inornata var. inornata, G. integrifolia, G. nana var. integerrima, G. nana var. nana, G. revoluta, G. squarrosa var. quasiperennis, G. stricta var. angustifolia, G. stricta var. platyphylla, and G. stricta var. stricta. "As circumscribed here, Grindelia hirsutula includes 30 or more reputedly distinct, local, regional, or ecotypic facies that have been named at species or infraspecific rank. Locally, such facies are easily recognized; in a broad view, they intergrade with other facies and are parts of a heterogeneous continuum. Taxonomies that have attempted to recognize the facies as distinct 'taxa' have led to almost as many specimens determined as 'intermediate' as are assigned to the named 'taxa'" (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2006). No infrataxa are distinguished in G. hirsutula by Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2006).
