Taxonomic Comments
Lamont's (1995) treatment of the infraspecific taxa of Eupatorium maculatum recognizes two varieties (var. foliosum and var. maculatum) in the subspecies maculatum and elevates what was formerly treated as variety bruneri to a subspecies.

Rank Reasons
Eutrochium maculatum is a perennial herb found in moist, calcareous soils in open sun or partial shade, along stream and canal banks, wet meadows, bogs, seeps, and edges of spruce-fir swamps in North America from Newfoundland and Labrador west to British Columbia in Canada and south to Georgia west to Kansas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Washington in the United States. Identification to variety is challenging since E. maculatum has the widest geographic distribution and morphologic variability of North American Eutrochium, and the three varieties intergrade where ranges overlap. It potentially faces threats from development, alteration in hydrology, logging, recreational activities, and invasive species, but threats are not widely documented. With a large range extent and over 300 occurrences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Eutrochium maculatum occurs in North America from Newfoundland and Labrador west to British Columbia in Canada and south to Georgia west to Kansas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Washington in the United States (FNA 2006). Range extent was estimated to be almost 10 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024). See individual entries for distribution details about the three varieties.
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are thousands of occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Eutrochium maculatum is potentially threatened by development, cattle grazing, rights-of-way maintenance, alteration in hydrology, logging, recreational overuse (especially ATVs), invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
