Taxonomic Comments
FNA (vol. 4, 2003) includes Amaranthus bigelovii and A. pringlei in A. torreyi. Kartesz (1999) includes specimens misidentified as A. torreyi in A. bigelovii, but also accepts the distinct species, A. torreyi. Kartesz (1994) did not accept A. torreyi as distinct. FNA also says the name A. torreyi has been widely misapplied to at least two other species, A. arenicola and A. watsonii, and that because of that, the name A. bigelovii was used for A. torreyi by J.D. Sauer in 1955 and in some recent floras. They go on to say the nomenclature and taxonomic relationships in the group should be critically reviewed.
