Rank ReasonsBidens laevis is a widespread annual herb occurring in marshes, pool margins, streams, estuaries, and meadows of North America, Mexico, Central America, and South America and as an introduced species to the Pacific Islands. There are over 900 occurrences of this species, which are threatened by development, invasive species, erosion, and changes to hydrology. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent CommentsBidens laevis occurs as a native species in North America, Mexico, Central America, and South America and in the Pacific Islands as an introduced species (FNA 2006). In the United States, it occurs from Maine south to Florida, north to Missouri, and west to California. Range extent was estimated to be over 36 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences CommentsBy applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 900 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact CommentsAlthough threats are not widely documented, Bidens laevis is threatened by development, invasive species, erosion, changes to hydrology, and other threats in some places (NatureServe 2024). However, their overall impact is likely negligible given species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
