Taxonomic Comments
Freeman's treatment in FNA (2019, vol. 17) does not recognize varieties or subspecies of Penstemon thompsoniae, saying there is a "morphologic continuum" between ssp. jaegeri and the typical subspecies and that the describing author of var. desperatus (Neese) later found the characters used to describe it were not sufficiently geographically correlated to distinguish it as distinct.
