Concept Reference
Mesler, M.R., M.S. Mayer, and S.K. Carothers. 2019. Silene nelsonii, a new large-flowered species from the Trinity River area of northwestern California, USA, and a re-evaluation of S. bolanderi Gray. Madroño 66(4); 176-193.
Taxonomic Comments
This concept of Silene hookeri follows Mesler et al. (2019) who did not recognize S. hookeri ssp. pulverulenta as distinct, and separately recognize S. bolanderi, S. serpentinicola, S. salmonacea, and S. nelsonii as species. This treatment is narrower than that in Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2005) because Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2005) was published before S. salmonacea and S. nelsonii were described.

Rank Reasons
Silene hookeri is known only from northwestern California and western Oregon. Potential threats include logging and vegetation/fuels management.
Range Extent Comments
Silene hookeri ranges from northwestern California (Mendocino County through Humboldt, Trinity, Del Norte, and Siskiyou counties) into western Oregon (Mesler et al. 2019).
Occurrences Comments
In California, Silene hookeri is known from 19 scattered extant locations (Mesler et al. 2019). It is not considered rare in Oregon (Mesler et al. 2019, NatureServe 2021).
Threat Impact Comments
Threasts include logging and vegetation/fuels management (CNPS 2021). The percentage of occurrences threatened is estimated to be 20-80% (Mesler et al. 2019).
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Silene hookeri occurs in grassy openings or sometimes on rocky slopes in chaparral, cismontane woodland, and lower montane coniferous forest (CNPS 2021).
