Rank Reasons
Alisma gramineum is a circumboreal perennial herb occurring in shallow fresh or brackish water or along muddy shores of North America, Eurasia, and North Africa. There are 500 estimated occurrences of this taxon range-wide, which are potentially threatened by development, water diversion, alteration of hydrology, erosion, succession, recreational activities, and invasive species. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent and high number of occurrences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Alisma gramineum is a circumboreal species, occurring in North American from British Columbia east to Quebec, Canada south to Vermont and New York, Virginia, west to California and north to Washington in the United States (FNA 2000, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024). The occurrence in Virginia is disjunct and may be the result of species dispersal by waterfowl (Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024). Alisma gramineum is also distributed in Eurasia and North Africa (FNA 2000). Range extent was estimated to be over 26 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 500 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Alisma gramineum is potentially threatened by development, water diversion, alteration of hydrology, erosion, succession, recreational activities, invasive species, and other threats in some places, though there is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand scope and severity of threats for this species.
