Rank Reasons
Although this species is limited to two counties in Oregon and California, it has relatively large population sizes as well as total numbers, grows on various habitats, and appears to have a net favorable response to disturbance. Many of the known populations are protected in 2 different Special Interest Areas, a Research Natural Area, and 3 different Wilderness Areas.
Range Extent Comments
The range of Howell's lousewort is limited to the Siskiyou Mts. of Siskiyou County, California and Josephine County, Oregon. Oregon populations are in the southern portion of the state with the majority within 2 miles of the CA/OR border.
Occurrences Comments
There are a total of 98 reported occurrences but probably at least 100. Approximately 21 in Oregon, the rest in California. There could be more occurrences in CA as of May 2005; the file is 2" thick and is all location data.
Threat Impact Comments
Wildlife (deer, squirrels, etc.) appear to eat the plants. Timber harvest activities may detrimentally affect plants but may also be advantageous to growth and dispersal. Most or all populations are grazed which may have detrimental effects on the plants' reporductive success.
