Potamogeton diversifolius occurs in wetlands in the United States, southwestern Canada, and Mexico. There are more than 300 occurrences, and it occurs on protected lands in the United States, such as National Forests and National Wildlife Refuges, National and State Parks, state wildlife conservation lands. Threats include the loss of wetlands to drainage or filling.
Range Extent Comments
Potamogeton diversifolius occurs in wetlands in the United States, southwestern Canada, and Mexico. In the United States it primarily occurs from Massachusetts to Minnesota south to Kansas, Texas, and Florida, with outlying and scattered populations in South Dakota, Wyoming, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Arizona, and California, and in southern Alberta and southern British Columbia, Canada. It has been documented in about one third of the states in Mexico. The range extent is about 8.5 million square kilometers (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, NatureServe 2023, Villaseñor 2016).
Occurrences Comments
Based on herbarium records, and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, there are more than 300 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023).
Threat Impact Comments
Threats to Potamogeton diversifolius include the loss of wetlands to drainage or filling.

Diagnostic Characteristics

From CNHP Wetland Guide 2012: Main Characteristics:
·Two different spikes: lower/submersed is rounded and upper/above water is club-shaped
·Elliptic floating leaves 5-40 mm long are usually present; submersed leaves linear, 6 mm or less wide
·Stipules adnate to submersed leaf blades for mostly 1-4 mm
·Embryo coil visible in fruit

Habitat

This species is found in streams, rivers, ponds, and lakes at elevations ranging from 5 to 2,500 meters (FNA 2023).
