Rank Reasons
Prenanthella exigua is a wide-ranging annual herb found in sandy, gravelly, or clay soils, desert washes and open slopes to sagebrush-juniper steppes and woodlands. It occurs in western North America from southeastern Oregon, southwestern Idaho, and Colorado south through western Texas and southeastern California in the United States to Baja California and Sonora in northern Mexico. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent and over 300 occurrences this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Prenanthella exigua occurs in western North America from southeastern Oregon, southwestern Idaho, and Colorado south through western Texas and southeastern California in the United States to Baja California and Sonora in northern Mexico (FNA 2006, Jepson Flora Project 2025). Range extent was estimated to be over 850,000 square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025 (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, RARECAT 2025, SEINet 2025).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1994 and 2025, it is estimated that there are over 300 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2025, iNaturalist 2025, RARECAT 2025, SEINet 2025).
Threat Impact Comments
There is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand threats for this species.
