Taxonomic Comments
Esslinger (2018) transfers Cladina stellaris to Cladonia stellaris; these represent the same concept for the element. A homotypic (nomenclatural) synonym of Cladonia alpestris (and Cladonia stellaris). According to Brodo (1976), "Pouzar and Vezda (1971) pointed out that the oldest available name at the species level for what has long been called Cladonia alpestris is Cenomyce stellaris Opiz, a new name introduced by Opiz for Cenomyce rangiferinus alpestris Ach. They then transferred the epithet into the genus Cladonia. In accepting the subgenus Cladina at the rank of genus, it is necessary to form a new combination, Cladina stellaris." Esslinger (2004) accepts the move of Cladina to Cladonia.
