Known from much of the temperate parts of the world, from Iceland (where frequent around hot springs), temperate North America, from east to west, south to Mexico, the Antilles (Cuba to Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles), south to Peru, Chile, Brazil; also in Europe (Sweden and Denmark to Spain, eastward to Romania, the Caucasus, into Asia (northern India, Assam, China, Korea, Japan), southward and eastward to the Philippines, Java, Sumatra, Fiji, Australia, New Zealand, and Hawaii. Also in subsaharan Africa (Cameroons, Tanganyika, Congo, S. Africa and elsewhere) and Madagascar. In North America, an abundant species from east to west, but with a hiatus involving the western edge of the Great Plains and the Rocky Mountain system. Concurrent with the wide range, the species shows striking variations in habitats.
