Rank Reasons
Calamagrostis stricta is a wide-ranging perennial grass in a variety of open wetland habitats occurring throughout northern North America, Europe, and northeastern Asia; its distribution in North America includes Canada, Greenland, and the United States, excluding most of the southeastern United States. Threats include development, succession, hydrological alteration, maintenance activities, recreation, and invasive species. Little is known about trends, but with a large range extent and large number of occurrences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Calamagrostis stricta occurs throughout northern North America, Europe, and northeastern Asia (FNA 2007). Its distribution in North America includes Canada, Greenland, and the United States, excluding most of the southeastern United States from Maryland west to Oklahoma and south.
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 3,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, this species is potentially threatened by development, habitat succession, hydrological alteration, maintenance activities (road, railroad, utility), recreation, invasive species, and other threats in some places, though there is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand scope and severity of threats for this species. Loss of wetland habitat threatens this species (Southern Appalachian Species Viability Project 2002).
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Calamagrostis stricta grows in open habitats, frequently associated with shrubs, in meadows and grasslands, wetlands, sandy shorelines, and sand dunes (FNA 2007). Substrates often but not exclusively alkaline to saline (FNA 2007).
