Rank Reasons
Native Sedge (Carex vernacula) occurs in alpine and subalpine woodland openings in the Sierra Nevada of California and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, it also occurs less commonly in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Wyoming. It is estimated there are between 81 and 300 occurrences, including many on National Forests and National Parks. Threats are those affecting alpine areas, such as recreation impacts and long-term or extreme drought such as may be associated with climate change.
Range Extent Comments
Native Sedge (Carex vernacula) occurs in alpine and subalpine woodland openings in the Sierra Nevada of California and the Rocky Mountains of Colorado, it also occurs less commonly in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, and Wyoming. Range extent was estimated to be 920,000 square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023 (CCH2 Portal 2023, Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2002, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, SEINet 2023).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1992 and 2023, it is estimated that there are between 81 and 300 occurrences rangewide (CCH2 portal 2023, GBIF 2023, iNaturalist 2023, SEINet 2023).
Threat Impact Comments
Threats to Native Sedge (Carex vernacula) are those affecting alpine areas, these may include recreation impacts and long-term or extreme drought such as may be associated with climate change.
