Taxonomic Comments
This record is for the broad treatment of Calystegia sepium as recognized by Brummitt in FNA (2023, vol. 14) and Kartesz (1994, 1999). The treatment in FNA accepts the subspecies americana, angulata, appalachiana, binghamiae (which includes ssp. limnophila, accepted as distinct in Kartesz (1994, 1999)), erratica, and sepium. Weakley et al. (2024) recognize these taxa in the genus Convolvulus and accept the subspecies recognized in FNA as the corresponding distinct species: Convolvulus americana, C. neoangulatus, C. appalachianus, C. binghamiae, C. erraticus, and C. sepium. Some U.S. reports of "ssp. sepium" as native may instead apply to other subspecies; in sense of Kartesz, ssp. sepium is non-native.

Rank Reasons
Calystegia sepium is a wide-ranging perennial herbaceous vine occurring worldwide in temperate and subtropical areas in North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australasia, and Europe. In North America, this species can be found from Newfoundland west to British Columbia in Canada, throughout the United States, and in Mexico. There are eight accepted subspecies, of which six occur in North America. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent and large number of occurrences, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Calystegia sepium occurs worldwide in temperate and subtropical areas in North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australasia, and Europe. In North America, this species can be found from Newfoundland west to British Columbia in Canada, throughout the United States, and in Mexico. There are eight accepted subspecies, of which six occur in North America (FNA 2023). See individual subspecies accounts for distribution.
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 10,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, this species is potentially threatened by development, invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Calystegia sepium grows in disturbed sites, woodland edges and openings, hedges, tidal swamps, marshes, brackish shores, and roadsides (FNA 2023, Weakley and the Southeastern Flora Team 2024).
