Rank Reasons
Comarum palustre is a perennial forb found in shallow ponds, bogs, meadows, marshes, and on streambanks and lake margins of boreal, alpine, and subalpine biomes of Eurasia, Greenland, and North America. There are over 3,000 occurrences of this taxon, which are threatened by development, water diversion, alteration of hydrology, erosion, succession, recreational activities, invasive species, climate change, and other threats in some places. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent, a high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, Comarum palustre is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Comarum palustre is a widespread circumboreal species, occurring across Eurasia, Greenland, and North America. In North America it is found "in a broad band across the northernmost United States and Canada as far north as the low arctic. Disjunct populations occur well to the north, as on Baffin and Victoria islands, and in the south, as in Gunnison County, Colorado, and the Uinta Mountains of Utah. Appropriate habitats are uncommon and geographically restricted in the southern part of the range, for example, in Idaho, Montana, and North Dakota" (FNA 2014). Range extent was estimated to be over 57 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 3,000 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Comarum palustre is likely threatened by development, water diversion, alteration of hydrology, erosion, succession, recreational activities, invasive species, climate change, and other threats in some places, though there is insufficient data, including anecdotal accounts, to understand scope and severity of threats for this species.
Ecology & Habitat

Description

The only red cinquefoil in Colorado. Its branches spread into leaves with 3-7 narrow leaflets which are sharply jagged. The Stem is a reddish brown, low sprawling, vine-like structure. Flowers extend from the branch which vary from red to purple, and are about 1" diameter.

Habitat

In North America, Comarum palustre occurs in "shallow, often sphagnum-dominated ponds, bogs, wet meadows, marshes, stream banks, and lake margins, mainly in boreal and low arctic habitats in the north, [and] subalpine to alpine sites in the south" (FNA 2014).
