Taxonomic Comments
This record represents the narrow concept of Populus balsamifera following FNA (vol. 7, 2010) not including P. trichocarpa. FNA (vol. 7, 2010) elevates P. balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa to full species level as P. trichocarpa and recognizes P. balsamifera as a distinct species. In contrast, Kartesz (1994) recognized P. balsamifera in a broad sense with two subspecies P. balsamifera ssp. balsamifera and P. balsamifera ssp. trichocarpa. Kartesz's P. balsamifera ssp. balsamifera is equivalent to FNA's P. balsamifera.
