Taxonomic CommentsKartesz (1999) and Flora of North America Editorial Committee (2006) treat Pseudognaphalium macounii and P. viscosum as distinct species. Reports of P. macounii from Texas are P. viscosum (Flora of North America Editorial Committee 2006).

Rank ReasonsPseudognaphalium macounii is an annual or biennial forb occurring in pastures, roadsides, forest edges, and dry, open habitats in woodlands of North America from British Columbia to Nova Scotia, Canada south to Virginia and Tennessee, north to Nebraska and west to Oregon, California, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico in the United States. This species also occurs in Mexico. There are over 400 occurrences of this taxon, which are potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, succession, invasive species, agriculture, and other threats in some places. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent, high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, Pseudognaphalium macounii is considered secure.
Range Extent CommentsPseudognaphalium macounii occurs in North America from British Columbia east to Nova Scotia, Canada south to Virginia and Tennessee, north to Nebraska and west to Oregon, California, Utah, Colorado, Arizona, and New Mexico in the United States (FNA 2006). It also occurs in Mexico. Range extent was estimated to be over 7 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences CommentsBy applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium records and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, there are estimated to be over 400 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact CommentsAlthough threats are not widely documented, Pseudognaphalium macounii is potentially threatened by development, rights-of-way maintenance, succession, invasive species, agriculture, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given the species' broad range, large number of occurrences, tolerance of light disturbance, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
