Rank Reasons
Sesuvium verrucosum is a widespread perennial herb occurring in moist or dry flats, coastal wetlands, and desert playas of North America, Mexico, and South America. There are over 500 occurrences of this species, which are potentially threatened by development and invasive species. However, with a large range extent, a high number of occurrences, and broad habitat preferences for abundant habitat, this species is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Sesuvium verrucosum occurs in North America, Mexico, and South America (FNA 2003). In the United States, this species ranges from Oregon to California east to Arkansas and Louisiana. Range extent was estimated to be 9.8 million square kilometers using herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens and photo-based observations documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are over 500 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Although threats are not widely documented, Sesuvium verrucosum is potentially threatened by development, invasive species, and other threats in some places. However, their overall impact is likely negligible given species' broad range, large number of occurrences, and affinity for typically abundant habitats, as well as no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities.
Ecology & Habitat
