Smith and Tejero-Diez (2014) redefine the genus Pleopeltis, and the generic placement of this taxon is in accordance with the Pteridophyte Phylogeny Group I (2016). Smith and Tejero-Diez (2014) recognize Pleopeltis polypodioides in the broad sense with five varieties.
