Native range uncertain (Little, 1979); native in southeastern USA, unclear whether native in southeastern Mexico (Veracruz to Yucatan); planted in southern United States as well as Latin America including Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands. Known from 3300-3600 m elevation in vicinity La Paz, Bolivia (zonas de Calacoto, Cota Cota and Sopocachi).
