Rank Reasons
Sibbaldiopsis tridentata is a perennial forb occurring in alpine tundra, grasslands, and woodlands on rocky and gravely shores, on rocky outcrops, and montane balds of North America and Greenland from Nunavut and the Northwest Territories east to Newfoundland and Labrador, south to Georgia, west to Tennessee and Iowa, and north to North Dakota in the United States and Canada. There are over 1,500 occurrences of this species, which are threatened by trampling and succession. Little is known about threats or trends, but with a large range extent, a high number of occurrences, abundant habitat, broad habitat preferences, and no obvious intrinsic vulnerabilities, Sibbaldiopsis tridentata is considered secure.
Range Extent Comments
Sibbaldiopsis tridentata occurs in North America and Greenland from Nunavut and the Northwest Territories east to Newfoundland and Labrador, south to Georgia, west to Tennessee and Iowa, and north to North Dakota in the United States and Canada (FNA 2014). Range extent was estimated using herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data collected between 1993 and 2024 (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Occurrences Comments
By applying a 1 km separation distance to herbarium specimens, photo-based observations, and NatureServe Network occurrence data documented between 1993 and 2024, it is estimated that there are more than 1,500 occurrences rangewide (GBIF 2024, iNaturalist 2024, NatureServe 2024, SEINet 2024).
Threat Impact Comments
Sibbaldiopsis tridentata is generally secure in high elevations in the southern portion of its range, though some populations may be impacted by trampling by humans (Southern Appalachian Species Viability Project 2002). Lack of disturbance leading to succession may also be a factor, as it needs open habitat.
Ecology & Habitat

Habitat

Sibbaldiopsis tridentata occurs in "dry rocky to gravelly shores or maritime habitats, rocky outcrops, montane balds and promontories in mixed conifer-hardwood woodlands, dry meadows of montane conifer communities, [and] alpine tundra, often in acidic soil" (FNA 2014).
